www.nixle.comStay Alert With Nixle
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, in its continuous endeavor to keep our community connected and protected, would like to announce its new alert messaging service, NIXLE.

Nixle is a free, simple, and trusted messaging service that allows the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to send real-time public safety threats, alerts and community events to the public via the web, email and/or cell phone. Individual users get to choose what messages they want to receive and how they would like to receive them.

Nixle, LLC developed this secure messaging technology to open trustworthy, reliable communications between governmental agencies and the communities they serve. Only authenticated agencies and organizations are permitted to use Nixle, which prevents false messages and impersonations. Pima County Sheriff’s Department messages sent through Nixle will also be published to the department’s Twitter account, but by looking for the "Nixle" url in the message, citizens can rest assure that the message actually came from our agency.

More importantly, Pima County residents will now be alerted to timely events such as road closures, Amber Alerts, missing children and vulnerable adults and other critical incidents where informing the public is critical. Messages are sent out at different levels including "ALERT", "ADVISORY", "COMMUNITY", and "TRAFFIC". The Pima County Sheriff’s Department then has the option of sending out messages to all subscribed members or just those in the vicinity of the action occurring.

Subscribers to this service can sign up at http://local.nixle.com/register. The user can choose to have messages sent to their text capable phone, email, both or simply log on to Nixle and view the messages. Levels of messages sent can also be chosen to lessen the amount of texts sent or increase the connection to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Users can also set unlimited locations, such as home, work and school, to stay informed about area incidents as well as widespread notifications.

Just as our messages are secure, so is your information. Nixle does not track users and does not allow advertising on their site. No third party will be contacting you or spamming you after you submit your registration information.

Every citizen is encouraged to sign up to receive these messages and begin connecting with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, especially those people who live, work and frequent the areas of Mount Lemmon and Arivaca, Arizona. Also, businesses that employ drivers or citizens who commute frequently are encouraged to sign up, so when a person is reported missing, additional eyes are assisting law enforcement in making a quick and safe recovery. Also, road closures will be published in timely fashion so fast changing weather and law enforcement related road closures won’t catch drivers off guard.

NOTE: The Pima County Sheriff’s Department does not advocate nor recommend reading text messages while driving and highly discourages this practice. If you choose to receive Nixle alerts via text message, please read only when safe to do so.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department endeavors to send messages only when alerting the public is necessary. If you choose to receive community messages, you may also receive an occasional message regarding important events such as Shred-A-Thons. Frivolous messages will not be sent and your email and text boxes will not be filled with spam by these messages. We want you, the public, to know that when you receive a message from us, it is important. Nixle is just one more way the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is working with the community to keep residents safe and informed.

CrimeReports.com - Crime Mapping & Statistics

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has partnered with CrimeReports.com to provide a FREE, easy-to-use web-based service for sharing crime data with the public, in near real-time.  Community members can now access their neighborhood crime information for free, empowering them to make informed decisions to help improve the safety of their families, friends, property and the community at large. Neighborhood Watch and Crime Free Multi-Housing groups can stay informed as to the events that are occurring within their communities.

Information is updated every 24 hours, so the information citizens obtain is timely and accurate, not days or weeks old. The accurate information can then be seen in a variety of ways; through crime mapping and through analytics. Crime mapping allows users to type in a specific address of interest (i.e. school, home, office), within the unincorporated areas of Pima County, Green Valley, Marana, Sahuarita, or Oro Valley, choose crime types, set dates or a variety of all three, and click “Get Report” to see them plotted on the map. (NOTE: Currently, incidents occurring at addresses within the Tucson city limits are not tracked.) The user can then click on each event plotted to gather more details about the incident that occurred, to include the case report number. The map can be manipulated to show a variety of views from street level or satellite views. The user can also pan and zoom to get varying viewpoints. Analytics allows users to obtain statistics, track trends, and view graphs and charts for crimes in Pima County. The graphs and charts come in handy for a variety of uses, to include presentations at Neighborhood Watch meetings.

As mentioned, the service is absolutely free. Individual user membership is not required; however, if a citizen chooses to sign up for free membership through the service provider, the site will save settings and provide updated information every time the user logs on. Also, the user can obtain community alerts, including crimes that have occurred in their area.   These alerts are sent to the user’s email address. The user determines how often the alerts are received by choosing the setting that works best for them, daily weekly monthly, etc. Also, sex offender notifications and mapping will be available later this fall.

CrimeReports.com provides crime statistics for numerous law enforcement agencies around the United States. At over 500 agencies and growing, the next time you are headed out on vacation or business trip, visit CrimeReports.com to ensure you are have timely, accurate information.
